The Complete Idiot's Guide to Eating Local

Today I am reviewing for all of you the book called "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Eating Local" by Diane A. Welland, M.S., R.D. which teaches you to enjoy fresher, healthier foods and help the environment by eating local. This book contains 320 pages and the ISBN: 978-1-61564-076-8 and the cover price is $16.95.

Synopsis: You want to eat healthy, fresh foods, and at the same time, be good to the environment. But it's a challenge to know what is available, when it's available and where you can get it locally. You can find your favorite foods and discover new favorites without headaches and a tank of gas. The next best thing to a personal tour through your local farmer's market, this helpful guide gives you:

* A primer on why eating close to the land not only rewards you with incredible food, but also supports your community & your planet.

* A look at heirloom vegetables, seasonal fruits, fresh meats and dairy products, an other local food that is near you.

* Tips for shopping local at food festivals, CSAs, U-picks, and even supermarkets, plus advice on food foraging.

* Suggestions for making the most of your harvest, including 25 regional recipes highlight local specialties.

My Review: I have never read an "idiots guide" before until now so I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. The book is broken down into 17 easy-to-read chapters and in the back of the book is a glossary, resources section, eating local by region section and a favorite recipes section. The book starts out with an introduction and explanation of what eating local is about along with what it means to you. It then goes into chapter 2 which is about the benefits of eating local which I found to be very motivating on why I need to do a better job at purchasing local food. As you go through the book you will find a chapter on local produce, local meat, fish & poultry, local dairy products & eggs and so forth. I really love how the book builds from step 1 to step 2 and so forth. It is really laid out nicely in an easy to read & understand format. Since I live near several farmer's markets and U-picks I found those chapters to be really helpful to me since I do prefer to purchase as much food as I can from local growers. I really like this book and I am excited to try out some of the local recipes in the back like the Maryland Crab Cakes and the Florida Key Lime Pie...yummy!

I think it is a great book and for those of you who are interested in this topic it would be a fabulous book for you and I guarantee you that you will learn lots of new tips and ideas once you read this book that you can apply tomorrow when it comes to feeding your family and do so in a local, responsible way.

I would like to thank the PR company that we work with for sending me this fabulous book. I look forward to reading it a few more times and I look forward to making several of the "local" recipes in the back of the book.
