Homemade Prune Bread Recipe

When I was a little girl my grandmother and my great aunt would spend Sunday afternoons making various types of bread and this homemade prune bread was one of their favorite breads to make. This is a vintage recipe from the late 1960's and is easy to make.

Homemade Prune Bread Recipe

1/2 lb. dried prunes
3/4 cup boiling water
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 large egg
2 tablespoons melted butter

Soak prunes in cold water for 2-3 hours, drain. Pit prunes and then chop them into small pieces. Add boiling water to the bowl with the chopped prune pieces and let stand for 5 minutes. Sift together the flour, sugar, baking soda and salt. Pour this into the prune mixture and stir to combine. (batter may be thick). Beat egg in a small bowl with electric mixer and then pour into the batter bowl. Pour in the melted butter and stir until all ingredients are well combined.

Lightly grease a loaf baking pan and pour batter into the loaf pan. Bake the prune bread in a preheated 350 degree oven for 35-45 minutes or until center is done.
