Homemade German Sauerbraten Recipe

Years ago I a dear old lady who lived beside us who immigrated to the United States from Germany. She had us over for dinner one evening and served us her homemade German Sauerbraten Beef Roast and today, I thought I would share her recipe with all of you. This recipe makes approximately 6 servings.

German Sauerbraten Recipe

3 lb. beef round
1/2 cup vinegar
1/2 cup water
1 onion, thinly sliced
2 bay leaves
3 whole cloves
2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

Place the beef in a large bowl. Combine together the vinegar, water, onion, bay leaves, cloves, salt and ground black pepper. Pour the mixture over the top of the beef and let stand for18 hours in the refrigerator.

Pour 3 tablespoons of vegetable or fat into a Dutch oven. Bring it up to medium-high heat and add in the meat. Brown well on both sides. Add 1 cup of water to the liquid in which meat was soaked. Pour the entire contents over the meat. Cover and simmer over low heat for 3 hours or until meat is tender. Remove meat; make gravy from the juices in the pan. Serve immediately.
