Book Review: Bethenny Frankel’s Skinnygirl Cocktails

Bethenny Frankel’s Skinnygirl Cocktails serves up a delicious collection of drinks for Skinnygirls and everyone else.

I’m not a fan of The Real Housewives of New York, but I know most of their names. I know that the seventh season is around the corner and that the Skinnygirl herself, Bethenny Frankel will make an appearance. My experience with Frankel comes from watching her now-canceled talk show, celebrity gossip, and the occasional recipe popping up on my Facebook feed. I’ve seen Skinnygirl wines and vodkas on the shelf, but haven’t strayed from my favorites yet. This may change thanks to Frankel’s new book, Skinnygirl Cocktails. This paperback collection of guilt-free recipes will hit the shelves on October 28, just in time for the holiday season.

Fans of Frankel’s Skinnygirl spirits, Naturally Thin, Skinnydipping, and The Skinnygirl Dish all know to expect big flavor with little calories from her recipes. Her focus on enjoying yourself without packing on the calories is one I can get into. I love that enjoyment is equally important to calorie counting. And especially like that her recipes and philosophy focuses on flavor.

Skinnygirl Cocktails starts with a short lesson on making any cocktail the Skinnygirl way, stocking a bar, and a recipe for simple sugar syrup. This chapter alone is valuable info for anyone planning a holiday party. Feel like a margarita? Frankel shares the recipe she made on an episode of Real Housewives of New York along with delicious sweet, sour, and spicy takes on the classic recipe. The martini chapter includes delicious renditions of the classic including my favorite, the neat and clean Old Hollywood (page 23). Her sparkling recipes are perfect for toasting the New Year or any other celebration and her chapter on sangria and spritzers gives me ideas for next spring or summer. The Inspired Infusions (page 69) are more suggestions than recipes and inspired me to make pineapple jalapeno vodka that I cannot wait to try.

If you like sweet, spicy, frozen, infused, or decadent cocktails, Frankel delivers. She even included a few snack recipes and additional tips for entertaining the Skinnygirl way. Pick up a copy of Skinnygirl Cocktails for yourself or as a gift. Now that the weather has cooled, the Kiss Me, I’m Irish (page 124) is on the menu for tonight. It’ll be the perfect after dinner, snuggle on the couch drink. Cheers!
